Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has admitted if it came down to a choice between Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid or Julian Draxler of FC Schalke for Arsenal, he’d go with Atletico’s centre forward.
Both players have been consistently linked with Arsenal throughout the season, with the Gunners trying to do a deal for Draxler at the end of the last transfer window.
Costa is reported to have a buy-out clause of £32 million while Draxler has a buy-out clause reportedly worth £37-38 million and based on that, the Frenchman says who to go for is a no brainer.
“For me signing a striker to help Giroud is the top priority for the summer. I think Wenger will try to sign a striker - If Diego Costa's release clause in £32m and Draxler costs around £38m there is no doubt. I would sign Costa. But this is just my opinion. I don't' speak about transfers with Wenger and the Arsenal officials,” Pires told IBTimes UK.
Pires has also revealed an astonishing admission that he’s never actually seen Draxler play in a live situation, monitoring his career to date through a television camera’s lens.
“I do not know Draxler so well, I've only seen him on TV and he looks good. But I think that paying his release clause is too much,” he added.
Pires’ comments make sense because Arsenal have a clear need for a high profile striker to come into the squad, especially if Nicklas Bendtner is set to leave in the summer.
Someone like Costa could come in and provide competition for Giroud, as well as improving the Frenchman’s game and helping him, and others, to become a better forward for the club.
There’s going to be an almighty scramble for both of the targets this summer, but in Pires’ eyes, there’s only one player the Gunners should be going after.
