Manchester United need to overcome a 2-0 deficit if they want to progress in the Champions League, they can draw inspiration from Bordeaux's 1996 miracle.
Manchester United takes on Greek side Olympiakos this evening, hoping to overturn the 2-0 first-leg defeat, and stage a miraculous come-back at Old Trafford. A victory by three clear goals would see the English champions progress to the last eight of the Champions League and would most likely save their season, and David Moyes' job.
Last season Barcelona had to fight back after a 2-0 first-leg defeat to AC Milan, they became the first side in the European Cup to overturn a two goal swing without an away goal in the first-leg, but it wasn’t the first time it had happened to the Milan club, and Manchester United will be hoping that they can repeat this unheralded piece of history.
French side Bordeaux had travelled to Milan back in 1996 for the first-leg of their Quarter-Final UEFA Cup tie against the Italian giants. Armed with some of the best names in football, Milan won 2-0 and looked to travel to France and finish the job.
The 19th of March 1996 is a night that will live in the memory of French football for a very long time, and it shows Manchester United fans that despite the poor situation they find themselves in, there is always hope.
Milan came to Bordeaux with an extremely strong side. Alberto Costacurta, Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini were in defence. Marcel Desailly and Patrick Vieira patrolled the midfield and Roberto Donadoni, Roberto Baggio and the legendary George Weah provided the attacking threat.
Bordeaux had some names of their own; goalkeeper Gaetan Huard still holds the record in Ligue 1 for the longest time without conceding a goal. Add in full-back Bixente Lizarazu, forward Christophe Dugarry and the mercurial Zinedine Zidane (with hair) and you will also have a chance. It may have been possible for Bordeaux to win; no one gave them a chance to go through.
We won’t ruin how the game panned out, but Bordeaux came out 3-0 winners on the night and reached the semi-final of the UEFA Cup. If Man United fans want some inspiration, you can watch the full match below.
Bordeaux would ultimately lose in the final to Bayern Munich, but they will always remember the night they came back from two goals down to knock out the Italian giants.
Will Manchester United fans remember tonight’s game for the same reasons?
