Schalke 04 forward Julian Draxler is set to play at the Bernabeu for the first time on Tuesday night.
One of the most talked-about transfer sagas during the January transfer window involved Julian Draxler’s proposed move to Arsenal.
As the days were edging towards the 31st of January, different newspapers and different sources all had differing stories on the situation.
How much are Arsenal willing to pay for him? Is there genuine interest from Bayern Munich?
These questions are likely to resurface during the summer, but for now, the German international can only focus on his current form for Champions League hopefuls Schalke 04.
Draxler and his teammates head to the Santiago Bernabeu merely because they have to. In the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, The Royal Blues were taken to pieces by a phenomenal Real Madrid performance – losing emphatically 6-1.
Reported by the Spanish paper AS, the 20-year-old spoke of the upcoming encounter with Real Madrid, labelling the situation as comical:
“Playing in the Bernabeu stadium is a place where all the footballers want to play.”
“Our situation, however, is comical. We are realistic enough to evaluate that after a 6-1 defeat there is little hope. In spite of this, we still want to play a good game.”
Despite Schalke’s imminent Champions League departure, their Bundesliga form has been good of late and despite the on-going speculation regarding a move to the Emirates, Draxler is fully motivated in helping his side qualify for next season’s tournament.
He added: “We are all very motivated, our desire is that we get the best out of each other and qualify for next season’s Champions League.”
