Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United to win, fans get the wrong idea...

Jose Mourinho Chelsea

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would like to see Manchester United win, but are fans of the Red Devils reading too much into it...?!

Chelsea beat Galatasaray comfortably last night to ensure they are the first English club to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Manager Jose Mourinho however hopes they are not alone.

Quizzed about Manchester United's fortunes he could have been indifferent, but as always the Chelsea manager had an opinion. And he was certain that he wanted the Red Devils to progress.

He told ITV: "I hope it is not true," quizzed about Chelsea being the sole English participant, “I hope Manchester United does it [against Olympiakos], but we are there. That is important for us."

Mourinho's words should be taken at face value about wanting a strong league - there's a couple of points re: self-preservation why he should want United to do well.

Firstly they are not really a viable contender to win the trophy, but should they get past Olympiakos, they could have one more round left in them and knock out a rival of Chelsea - or even get drawn against the Blues - a clash the Special One will be confident of winning.

Secondly the UEFA co-efficient system means stronger performances from English clubs will preserve the status of four qualifying spots from the Premier League. The current top four have all but secured their places right now, but if it was only three like in Serie A - it would be a real fight from now until the end of the season for all concerned.

Perhaps a little oddly though, a number of United supporters took Mourinho's comments as a sort of 'come on' - possibly out of their own desperation for a David Moyes replacement. Here's what was said in response on Twitter:
