Tottenham latest, no centre-backs for Benfica clash? Townsend looks for positives.

A selection of the latest stories involving Tottenham Hotspur this Tuesday evening.

Tottenham could be without a single centre-back for the return leg of their Europa League tie against Benfica in Lisbon on Thursday, according to the London Evening Standard.

Younes Kaboul could miss the game after he picked up a knock in the 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League at the weekend.

Jan Vertonghen is suspended after picking up a yellow card in the first leg whilst Spurs are still without Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches.

Andros Townsend has said there are plenty of positives that the side can take from Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal as they try to achieve the almost impossible task of progressing to the last eight of the Europa League by turning around a 3-1 deficit away from home.

Townsend told the club’s website: “We know it was a good team performance, we worked hard, controlled possession and had more chances. We know ultimately we lost, but we can take the positives to Benfica.

“It’s another big game on Thursday and then back here [against Southampton] on Sunday. There is still a lot to play for. We have to put this behind us and move on.

“We’ve nothing to lose. We’re two goals behind from the home leg, so we can go there, have a go and see what happens.”

Any hopes that Spurs had of signing Barcelona’s Marc Bartra have now ended with the 23-year-old signing a new contract at the Nou Camp according to TalkSport. Liverpool were also said to be interested in the player.
