Manchester United and Toni Kroos – a match made in heaven for fans of the faltering champions; but will it actually happen?
After all, the Old Trafford faithful will have grown used to links with some of the world’s best players only to see them opt to go elsewhere or nowhere at all.
But the Kroos rumours refuse to go away, with the Bayern Munich midfielder yet to agree a new deal with the reigning European champions amid suggestions that the German international will move away in order to earn the money his talent deserves.
He would certainly be an improvement on David Moyes’ current midfield options; in fact that is something of an understatement. He would completely transform the centre of their side.
And now another man has had his say on the Kroos situation, former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack.
In an interview with Sport Bild, the ex-German international said, “I think he checked out his market value.
"He will know where he is in the salary structure. That’s important to demonstrate his value. It is perfectly legitimate that he looks around.”
Knowing the game as he does, Ballack will understand that players want to consider all the options available to them before they settle on a final decision.
But as with the reported targets before him, it seems more likely that United will miss out on him than secure his services, if for no other reason than their likely failure to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Then again, if Kroos is prepared to sacrifice that for one season, he could become an integral part of United’s next generation.
