Why Port Talbot striker wins world player of the weekend

This week’s best performance in world football goes not to Ronaldo, Messi or Aguero, but Rhys Griffiths of Port Talbot.

Rhys Griffiths of Welsh Premier League club Port Talbot takes this weekend’s best performance prize after scoring a staggering seven goals in a league match against Afan Lido on Friday night.

Griffiths scored his first from the penalty spot after just 12 minutes, but then netted his following six all in the second-half.

The striker becomes the first player to ever score seven goals in the Welsh Premier League, but seemed to cool all the hype around his achievement on Twitter.

Griffiths has won the golden boot for the Welsh domestic league seven times already, and his bag of goals on Friday puts him top of the charts again with 18 for the season.

The Welshman said in an interview with UEFA that he is not done with breaking records just yet: “I'm happy with every record that I can get. I want as many as I can,” he said.

"The golden boot is something I think about, it's something I will always be known for, and it's an award I would love to win again."
