PHOTO: Shock on the Manchester United bench

A snapshot of Manchester United’s bench against Liverpool told you all you needed to know about the current concerns over the direction of the club.

Manchester United and Liverpool promised to be an exciting encounter between two heavyweight clubs – unfortunately, it never turned out that way.

Liverpool sealed the three points at Old Trafford with a comfortable 3-0 victory, leaving them just four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, and with a game in hand.

Manchester United’s defeat, of course, has all but ended David Moyes’ aim of guiding the Red Devils into the top four, and securing Champions League football for next season.

The hosts were bitterly disappointing throughout, failing to test Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolete until just before half-time, when Wayne Rooney sweetly connected with Rafael’s cut-back. Even then, however, the Belgian international dealt fairly comfortably with the shot.

Manchester United fans, despite going in a goal down at half-time, must have thought the performance couldn’t possibly get much worse. Unfortunately, it did, and after Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard gave his team a two-goal cushion, there was no way back.

Throughout the second-half, the camera spanned in the direction of the Manchester United bench, focusing on the manager's anguish, and bafflement at his side’s inexplicably poor display.

What really caught the eye, however, was the Manchester United players on the bench looking on (picture above). The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and other stars looked on in shock and disbelief, as it finally sunk in how far and fast their team of Champions had fallen.
