Spanish reports have claimed that Chelsea had scouts in attendance during Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Espanyol this weekend.
The scouts would have been impressed with the trio’s contributions, as the home side won 1-0 to remain three points behind rivals and La Liga leaders Real Madrid and one point ahead of reigning champions Barcelona.
Belgian international goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been phenomenal for Atletico Madrid this season, and much has been made of his future.
The 21-year-old has declared his happiness in Madrid, whereas Jose Mourinho and Chelsea are so impressed with his qualities that they refuse to sell the star.
Plenty of rumours have surfaced regarding his future, but a likely outcome could be a contract extension at Stamford Bridge beyond 2017 and another year-long loan spell at Atletico Madrid whilst current Blues number one Petr Cech remains in West London.
£32m Striker Diego Costa is currently enjoying the finest season of his career. He has netted 22 goals in 26 La Liga starts for Diego Simeone’s side, and he has recently made his debut for the Spanish national team.
Against Espanyol, he scored the only goal of the game after 55 minutes and was full of attacking endeavour.
Jose Mourinho has publically commented on his discontent with his current strikers on more than one occasion, and a top striker remains Chelsea’s number one priority this summer – with Diego Costa an impressive candidate.
The third player that was reportedly watched by scouts is reliable left-back Luis Filipe – a player who has also been linked with a move to Manchester United this season.
The 28-year-old has been one of Atletico Madrid’s most consistent performers, making more than 90 tackles and 45 interceptions in just 23 La Liga games.
With Chelsea looking for a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole in that left-back spot, perhaps Luis Filipe could be the man to rival Cesar Azpilicueta and provide Mourinho with strength in depth down Chelsea’s left flank.
Would Diego Costa and Luis Filipe be good singings for Chelsea this summer?
