Match to be played on Wednesday March 19 2014 at 19:45 GMT. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.
The second leg of Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Olympiakos just got a lot more important following the Premier League defeat against Liverpool yesterday.
David Moyes needs a remarkable sequence of events and results because United look a million miles off the top four at the moment.
One way United can qualify for the Champions League next season is by winning the tournament this year but they have to overturn a 2-0 defeat from the first leg for that to still be possible.
Here’s the side Moyes could go with on Wednesday.
GK – David De Gea
One of the few United players who has been relatively consistent so far this season. He retains his place.
RB – Rafael
Rafael should continue at right-back. He needs to be tight defensively and needs to get forward and support the attack well when he can.
CB – Rio Ferdinand
Don’t be surprised if Ferdinand gets a start in this game. Moyes will want a tight defensive unit and he could opt for players with plenty of experience who he trusts.
CB – Nemanja Vidic
With Vidic banned for the next two domestic games, Moyes can ask him to work hard for 90 minutes in this game as he’ll have extra rest afterwards.
LB – Patrice Evra
The Frenchman should slot in on the left hand side of the defence. He’ll get forward when he can but needs to go back to basics in terms of his defending.
RM – Antonio Valencia
United need goals and they need pace if they’re going to press or counter attack. Valencia is one of the quickest players in the squad.
CM – Michael Carrick
Carrick will do what he does best and sit, protecting the back four, trying to make it difficult for Olympiakos to move the ball around freely.
CM – Marouane Fellaini
Moyes could opt to ask Fellaini to play in a more advanced role playing to his physical strengths and power in attack.
LM – Adnan Januzaj
Januzaj is a more subtle creative and attacking player. United need him to have a big 90 minutes and he’s one of the few players who could turn this game in an instant.
ST – Wayne Rooney
Rooney will probably play in a slightly withdrawn role in attack. He’ll press forward when he can but could also drop into a central midfield role when needed.
ST – Robin Van Persie
Van Persie needs to step up and take some responsibility for the attack, which will give Rooney that luxury of being able to drop into the midfield when needed.
