Manchester United icon admits the club no longer at peak of their powers.
Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is a huge fan of the club whose shirt he once wore so famously, but even he seems to know the writing is on the wall.
Discussing his love for football, he name-dropped Manchester United as one of the elite clubs in Europe - but crucially did so in the past tense.
At a film festival in Lyon, speaking prior to the weekend's defeat to Liverpool and quotes ran by Le10Sport yesterday, he said:
"There is the beauty of the game it's also fun. I think teams like Barcelona in the last decade, Manchester United, until not very long ago, embodied it."
It is 20 years since Cantona starred in United's 1993/94 side, a double-winning team hailed far and wide for their attacking football and wing play.
David Moyes' current floundering side could not possibly be further away, not only in league position - but in style of play.
The Red Devils routinely struggle to break teams down, and do not possess the same dynamic wingers, in terms of personnel or in tactics.
For Cantona to describe United as embodying the beautiful game in the past tense, is spot on.
How could any Manchester United fan possibly disagree with their former icon after watching the displays this season?
