'Delph and Sidwell would be doing better at United than Cleverley'

Aston Villa and Fulham midfielders praised in contrast to Manchester United star by former West Ham man.

'Fabian Delph and Steve Sidwell would be doing better at United than Tom Cleverley' - argues former West Ham defender Tony Gale.

The Soccer Saturday pundit told Sky Sports News on Monday of his belief that Cleverley certainly should not be heading to the World Cup with England this coming summer.

He said: "We have got lots of better options.

"If Fabian Delph was at United he would be doing better, if Mark Noble, or Steve Sidwell were in the United side they'd be doing better.

"This is not to have a go at Tom Cleverley, I'm not here to do that, but he's not played well this season.

"His confidence has taken a battering and he's not ready to go to the World Cup."

Surely then Gale adding in his two cents on the player on a weekend where Cleverley played just 15 minutes as a substitute is not going to do his confidence any good, and nor is reeling off a list of players who he argues would do better at his current club than he would.

But when you look at even the most basic of statistics, in terms of goals and assists, and compare the players concerned, Cleverley comes out bottom of the list.

Surely being given the chance to play alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie would improve the other trio?

Perhaps it may inhibit them, Delph for example has taken a long time to start to fulfil his potential at Villa after bad luck with injuries and poor form when he first arrived.

But if Cleverley does lose his squad place, all three should be considered by Roy Hodgson for a place at the World Cup, even if they are not the most 'fashionable' tips to make the squad, all are having better seasons than the United man.
