But now, the Dutch side are six points behind leaders Ajax after a considerable dip in form.
On Saturday Vitesse lost again, this time 2-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven after a goalkeeping mistake from Piet Velthuizen gifted the visitors an early lead.
But what of the Chelsea contingent, and more specifically, what of Lucas Piazon, whose goal-scoring exploits in the early months of the campaign fired his temporary club to the top of the table?
Piazon had scored 11 league goals and provided eight assists before Christmas. But since the turn of the year, the Brazilian has failed to get one of either.
It is quite a barren spell for a player who may only be 20, but who hit the ground running at Vitesse.
In recent games Piazon has been selected only for a place on the bench, a decision that was made after Vitesse lost 2-0 away to FC Twente.
Since then, the left-sided attacker has started four consecutive matches on the bench and has played only 79 minutes of competitive action in that time.
Until Saturday’s result, Vitesse were doing fine in his absence, winning three on the trot. But it will be interesting to see if the starlet is able to rediscover his earlier form in what remains of the season.
Given that form he looked a possibility to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s thinking next season. But now it appears another loan spell is more likely.
That said, given his age he still has plenty of time to mature before ultimately staking a claim for a place in the Chelsea first-team.
