Reported Liverpool left-winger target’s contract talks 'on hold’

Reportedly a target for Liverpool, Nicolas Gaitan will apparently not be signing a new contract until the summer at the earliest.

Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of left-wingers in recent months, with Yevhen Konoplyanka, Lazar Markovic and Nicolas Gaitan among the most recent.

And now reports from Portugal claim the latter will not be signing a new contract just yet.

Newspaper O Jogo reports that Benfica chairman Luis Filipe Vieira has opted to leave the renewal of Gaitan’s contract for now, with his side in the midst of a potentially title-winning season.

The Primeira Liga side are flying high and are closing in on the league trophy, and the paper reports that while Gaitain is approaching the final two years of his contract, an extension will not be forthcoming for a while yet.

The Argentine winger’s current deal runs until the summer of 2016, so there is no rush to renew. And the paper goes on to suggest that an extension until 2018 may ultimately be agreed.

But Gaitan is now in a far better negotiating position than previously, after he rediscovered his form in some style, scoring a screamer in the Europa League and also netting a vital winner away to Belenenses.

Considering the age and ability of Liverpool’s other reported targets, Gaitan always appeared the least likely option to strengthen Brendan Rodgers' left side. But all the time a new contract goes unsigned, you never know…
