With David Moyes expected to be handed a war chest this summer to strengthen Manchester United’s squad, a energetic and creative midfield player will be one of the main transfer objections.
A player that has been repeatedly linked with a switch to Old Trafford is Ilkay Gundogan, whose deal with Borussia Dortmund is running down.
The Germany international’s current contract expires in the summer of 2015, with the Bundesliga powerhouses needing to make a decision over the star’s future in forthcoming months.
With United, Barcelona and Real Madrid all believed to be keeping a close eye on the situation, Dortmund are keen to renew his stay with them.
Chief executive Hans-Joachim Watze has revealed that the German club are eager to make progress on extending Gundogan’s deal in the next week.
“The renewal of Ilkay Gundogan seems like a never-ending story, but later next week we would like the situation to be clearer,” he told Calcio Mercato.
“Obviously we would like to extend his contract.”
United look set to test Dortmund’s resolve this summer, with the German club surely keen to avoid a situation where the playmaker’s deal enters its last 12 months.
