Swansea’s top-flight status boosted as Michu returns

Spaniard’s flair is what Swans have been missing the last few months.

Swansea fans can breathe a sigh of relief this weekend with their star man ready to return at just the right time.

Even if, however unlikely, the Swans fall at home to the struggling West Bromwich Albion, they can count their lucky stars as one man’s return will surely rid them of any relegation threat. Michu is back, and can fire them to a top-half finish.

The Swans have had a below-par season by their own high standards, not least because of their commitments in the Europa League.

With success for a club like Swansea always comes a struggle to repeat it. Look at their opponents on Saturday for example. West Brom finished a club best 8th place in the Premier League last season, but now sit outside the drop zone on goal-difference with just nine games to play.

While Albion’s missing link on the field this year has clearly been the absence of Romelu Lukaku, Swansea can also lay claim to Michu’s injury as reason for their recent troubles.

But the sparkling Spaniard is back, and just at the right time. Swansea sit 14th, just two points of West Ham United in 10th, a position they must now make their own. Having Michu back alongside the so far impressive Wilfried Bony can spur the club to a reasonable finish, that come the end of the season will read a solid attempt to go alongside their European efforts.

Michu’s 18 goals last season is much the reason for expectation on Swansea. In his absence we have seen the unthinkable dismissal of Michael Laudrup, but a rejuvenated squad under Garry Monk.

If the Spaniard can find the kind of form shown under his previous manager, Swansea will break back into similar territory they have been used to the last few seasons, and regroup again for a big push next season.

Can Michu fire Swansea to a top-half finish?
