Jan Vertonghen has said that Sunday’s North London derby has taken on even greater significance after Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League last night.

Vertonghen is quoted in the London Evening Standard, saying: “Every game gets bigger and bigger if we keep losing. The north London derby is a massive game at the moment. We both need a win on Sunday so one team will be very disappointed.

“There is no reason not to be motivated but we have to play better and we all want to do that. Sometimes we look good but other days we are not good enough.”

Christian Eriksen has been telling the Tottenham website that he knows all about the importance of the clashes with Arsenal, despite only arriving at White Hart Lane last summer.

“I’ve played in one and now it’s at home, so I’m looking forward to it. It would mean everything [to get a positive result] and would give everyone a huge boost.”

Midfielder Sandro has told the club’s website that Sunday’s clash is a great opportunity for Spurs to put thing right after recent performances.

“It’s a massive game for us against Arsenal and one I really love to play in. I know how much it means to the fans for us to win this one and I really hope we can do it for them and of course, for ourselves.

Spurs are hopeful that record signing Erik Lamela can play again this season after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a back problem.

Head Coach Tim Sherwood said earlier in the week: “There was a problem with his thigh, then they diagnosed the problem with his back. He’s having continued treatment and now he’s started rehab.

“We’re hoping to have him back before the end of the season but there are no guarantees.”
