Is Toure right to claim Chelsea are favourites for the title?

Yaya Toure may be trying to take the pressure off his team-mates after a difficult week...

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has said that Chelsea are now favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea are currently seven points clear of Liverpool and Arsenal – who occupy second and third respectively – having played a game more, whilst they are nine points clear of Manchester City – who have played three games fewer than Jose Mourinho’s men.

Chelsea boss Mourinho has been keen to downplay his side as title favourites this season and has tried to heap the pressure on other sides. He said that Manchester City are favourites to win the title because if they won their three games in hand, they would leapfrog Chelsea on goal difference, whilst saying that Liverpool only having the Premier League to focus on is a massive advantage.

But Toure believes that Chelsea having the points on the board is a big advantage.

The Ivorian is quoted, saying: “Chelsea are nine points ahead. Yes we have three games in hand, but we could lose all three of them. Chelsea for me are the favourites.”

One of the other reasons Toure may be claiming the league leaders are the favourites, is to seek to take pressure off the side after being knocked out of two competitions within a week – following their shock defeat to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup, and their Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

There is also the factor that City haven't been their free scoring selves of late. Since their loss to Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium they have only scored three in a game once - in their League Cup final win over Sunderland.

Also, the bookies seem to think Chelsea are in pole position - and are best priced at 5/6 to win the title come May, with Manchester City as long as 11/5.

Toure, however, did say this City side will try and push Chelsea all the way.

He added: “We just need to keep working and try to win all of the games.

“It’s going to be difficult. But when you lose games, you learn more about yourselves. Sometimes when you lose, it’s not bad.”
