Manchester United striker Robin van Persie continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Monaco the latest side to have their hat thrown into the ring.
The Mirror wrote last week how the Ligue 1 big spenders were interested in the Dutchman, who is said to favour a fresh challenge.
While such interest is at present just speculative it seems, if United decided to sell, Monaco would be a welcome destination from the club's point of view.
Not only could they afford to trump other clubs in a bidding war, ensuring United would get maximum re-sale value on the Dutchman, he would be playing in a foreign league and given the travails of David Moyes' side, the chances of meeting Monaco in European competition next season is unlikely, with Claudio Ranieri overseeing their rise to second in Ligue 1.
Far better to a sale to Arsenal and even Chelsea who were also linked last week, who David Moyes would be reluctant to sell to, and probably rather keep the wantaway striker begrudgingly.
And allowing Van Persie to move to Monaco could crucially open up the possibility of a swap deal for a long-term United target: James Rodriguez.
The Colombian winger was heavily linked with the Red Devils last season before sealing a switch to Monaco in a double-deal with Joao Moutinho.
Just 22-years-old, the former Porto man has been absolutely terrific this season, showing just why big money was paid for his signature, reported to be in the region of £40 million.
This of course means any swap deal would leave United paying cash plus Van Persie for his signature, but that wouldn't necessarily be a bad move.
Rodriguez has an impressive 7 goals and 11 assists already this season, currently playing alongside former United man Dimitar Berbatov in the principality.
While he and Monaco may take some convincing, Van Persie is the only available chip in negotiations United really have if they want to sign Rodriguez. Money is no object to them, but talent is what they want, and top class strikers are hard to come by.
Falcao's injury may leave them with a little uncertainty heading into next season, and Lacina Traore's injury hit loan at Everton won't convince that he is the answer just yet either. Van Persie would certainty address that.
United have serious concerns in the wing position, with Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Nani a mixture of poor and inconsistent. Rodriguez would be a serious upgrade if the Red Devils are serious about strengthening for the future.
They may just have to decide who is more important - a 29-year-old Dutch striker or an exciting winger seven years his junior.
