No Smalling in sight at Manchester United training - Could he miss Liverpool game?

Chris Smalling either missed training this morning at Carrington, or is extremely camera shy.

Manchester United take on arch-rivals Liverpool this Sunday in one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the season so far.

For United one of the biggest tasks at hand will be how to stop the marauding front trio of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling from running them ragged throughout the game.

So who do United start at the back.

Rafael and Patrice Evra are a given - but who plays central?

It would be easy to argue that the experience of Nemanja Vidic and/or Rio Ferdinand is needed for a game of this magnitude.

But then again - neither have really been shining recently.

Then there is the fact that last week Phil Jones and Chris Smalling actually had a pretty decent game - dropping one of them might just seem a tad unfair.

But could it be that one of them is unavailable anyway?

Manchester United released images of their first-team in training at a foggy Carrington this morning - and there does not seem to be a Chris Smalling shaped figure in sight.

One of the tallest players in the squad, he would certainly stand out from the crowd.

But on second inspection he does not appear to be present.

Smalling is of course very prone to the odd niggle - and he might have missed the session for something rather innocuous.

There is also the very real possibility he is just off camera - this is just speculation based on 13 pictures so don’t take it verbatim.

He is not listed as injured on PhysioRoom - however others such as Javier Hernandez and Nani both appear to be in the training photos - so where is Chris this morning.

David Moyes will likely clear everything up before the weekend - but by the looks of things Smalling appears to be at least a doubt for the game.

However, it is a Sunday game, so he has three days to recover and make it back for a very important fixture.
