Wigan winger nearing full fitness as teammate suffers long-term injury blow

DW Stadium - Wigan Athletic

Shaun Maloney of Wigan played 45 minutes yesterday for the first time since September.

Fans of Wigan Athletic are enjoying a tremendous week, with news of Shaun Maloney returning to fitness coming after their FA Cup victory over Manchester City.

Maloney has been a key player for Wigan over the last few seasons, whether in the Premier League or Championship, but has been out of action since September after undergoing hip surgery.

You may remember this winner Maloney scored against Manchester United last season:

The Latics star managed 45 minutes for the club's development squad against Morecambe in the Final Third Development League Cup, on a night that also saw the first team register a late three points against a stubborn Sheffield Wednesday.

But it's not all good news for Wigan, as word came after the match that the injury sustained by Chris McCann against Manchester City is a long-term one, and McCann will now join fellow central midfielder Ben Watson on the sidelines. Injuries to these two key players will pile the pressure on on-loan Chelsea star Josh McEachran – but may help his career finally take off.

Wigan are now level on points with Reading who sit sixth, but have a two game advantage on the Royals. They travel to Portman Road on Saturday to face Ipswich and will be hoping for another important three points to aid their hopes for promotion.
