Liverpool morning news: Defender says Reds can handle title pressure

A selection of the latest stories involving Liverpool Football Club this Thursday morning.

Liverpool’s vice-captain Daniel Agger has said Liverpool can handle the pressure of being involved in the title race.

The Reds currently lie in second place – a position that very few commentators or pundits will have expected them to be at this stage of the season.

Agger told the Liverpool Echo: “When you play for Liverpool Football Club, there is always pressure and that won’t change between now and the end of the season.

“Part of playing for this club is being able to handle that pressure. I think the players here have proved over the course of this season that they are more than capable of doing that.

“We have had some great results and there have been a few times when we have been all the way up there at the top.”

Liverpool’s youngsters were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup last night after a thrilling tie with Reading at the Madejski Stadium. The game finished 4-4 after extra time with the Reds losing 5-4 on penalties.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has denied any contact with Liverpool as he enters contract talks according to the Daily Express.

The 28-year-old midfielder has also been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United as well as to Merseyside.

However, he is quoted saying: “Sometimes I have received phone calls from agents who told me of the interest of clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

“But no-one from these clubs however, has never contacted us directly. And in case I would tell them to talk to Juve.”
