Manchester United have been linked with a whole host of players in recent times, so the name Juan Bernat may not have registered in the minds of the majority of their fans.
Not when you consider that the likes of Toni Kroos, William Carvalho and Edinson Cavani are some of the more high-profile players linked with an Old Trafford switch.
But the Valencia left-back is reportedly being considered as a possible replacement for Patrice Evra, whose future remains uncertain with his current contract coming to an end this summer and a new deal yet to be announced.
Bernat is a 21-year-old Spaniard who has featured regularly for Valencia this season. He has made 22 La Liga appearances to date, along with an additional seven in the Europa League and four in the Copa del Rey.
In that time he has scored one goal and provided two assists (including one against Real Madrid).
And now, Spanish website Superdeporte reports that David Moyes had a scout in attendance for Sunday’s match between Valencia and Athletic Bilbao; and they claim Bernat was the one being most closely watched.
Bernat’s current contract runs for another two seasons, and with talks over a possible renewal suggested in the Spanish report Moyes may have to move quickly if he wants his man.
With Ander Herrera also in action on Sunday, the report claims United will not be making another move for him.
“The signing of Juan Mata shuts out Herrera,” the story claims. But as for Bernat: He could be a viable and no doubt cheaper alternative to the regularly linked Luke Shaw. And as an ex-winger, Bernat knows how to get up and down the line and make it count in the attacking third.
