A Premier League move for one of the brightest young stars in German football looks off the cards as Donis Avdijaj has signed his first professional contract with Schalke.
The 17-year-old has been gaining rave reviews for his performances at youth level and has been dubbed ‘the new Ozil’ as a result.
Avdijaj has netted 15 goals in 13 appearances in the A Juniors Bundesliga West this season for Schalke under-19’s and operates in the number ten role.
However, despite reports that Liverpool have been trying to snatch the young prodigy from the Bundesliga side, a new contract has been confirmed for the star on the Gelsenkirchen club’s official website.
Avdijaj has signed a five-year deal, while fellow youth players Marvin Friedrich and Pascal Itter have agreed three-year contracts.
Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt was full of praise for Avdijaj.
“He’s an attacking player with an excellent eye for goal, as his recent scoring rate for Schalke illustrates,” he said.
Reports in the German press last month indicated that Schalke were ready to slap a €50 million release clause on the youngster’s head, but this is not revealed in the news.
Avdijaj has also represented Germany at under-17 level, scoring ten goals in 13 games.
