Chelsea latest: Matic embraces 'Beast' nickname, defender to sign new deal

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Stamford Bridge...

Chelsea added Nemanja Matic to their squad in January despite selling the Serbian midfielder just three years earlier, but his impressive displays have already made him a fans favourite at Stamford Bridge. His dominating performances in the middle of the park have earned him the nickname 'Beast', and Matic says he's happy to have it.

"I saw something on the internet which said this about me,' says the former Benfica man. "It’s very nice if the people think this about me because it would be a good nickname to have. I have to be like this because I play in a position where you have to be the beast!"

"Of course, I am always very happy when people have nice things to say about me, and it’s a pleasure if they like the way I play. I wanted to show my quality and I know it was important to start well because that helped me to feel more comfortable."

Matic's compatriot Branislav Ivanovic has nailed down the right back slot in the Blues line-up, and it appears that the club are now looking to extend Ivanovic's contract. A star since his move from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2006, Ivanovic has now racked up 256 appearances for Chelsea, providing superb performances from both right back and centre back.

A new four year deal is reportedly on the table for Ivanovic, which would be worth around £120,000 a week, despite the 30-year-old having two years left to run on his current deal.

Meanwhile, despite having an abundance of attacking midfielders at his disposal, manager Mourinho is being linked with a move for Napoli's Marek Hamsik. Chelsea already have the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah, but reports in Italy suggest that a disgruntled Hamsik could be on Chelsea's radar this summer.
