Jean-Marie Dongou never showed up for Cameroon’s recent international friendly with Portugal.
There are a number of reasons why a player may not want to go on international duty, but being overawed by a teammate probably isn’t the most common.
In a story reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, this is exactly the reason why Barcelona youth star Jean-Marie Dangou failed to show up for Cameroon’s international friendly defeat against Portugal last week.
The reasoning between the youth player and Chelsea star Samuel Eto’o's reported dispute is that of Eto’o's former representative and legal advisor Jose Maria Mesalles – a man currently advising Dongou.
Dongou joined Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia at the age of 13, and the Samuel Eto’o foundation endorsed the player during his early days at the club.
The problem began with the bitter split between Samuel Eto’o and his agent Jose Maria Mesalles, and whilst Chelsea’s number one striker moved on to Inter Milan, Anzhi and later to Stamford Bridge, his young protégé Dongou remained loyal to Mesalles.
Eto’o is claimed to have regularly pleaded with Dongou – who happens to be a promising striker himself - to distance himself from his former agent. The Barcelona youth star, however, is opposed to that idea – resulting in an uneasy relationship between the pair.
Unfortunately, those who suffer the most are the Cameroonian national team and their fans. A possible strike partnership at the World Cup between the two could have been special, yet, it now appears a situation that fans around the world are in danger of not seeing at all.
