Valencia receive European boost as Chelsea star returns to training

Chelsea loanee Oriol Romeu returns to training after a six week lay-off.

Ahead of Valencia’s Europa League trip to face Bulgarian side Ludogorets, they have been boosted by the return of Chelsea’s on-loan midfielder Oriol Romeu.

Confirmed by Spanish paper AS, Romeu appeared to be fully participating in training without any problems.

The 22-year-old midfielder had been loaned back to La Liga last summer following the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

After joining the club from Barcelona in 2011 for a reported €5m fee, Oriol Romeu was regularly named in the match-day squad and made 16 appearances in his debut season. Since then, the youngster hasn’t featured so much, and a summer exit – at least on loan – was always likely, hit with a cruciate knee ligament injury just when it appeared he was going to be a key player under Rafa Benitez.

The former Spanish U21 star commented back in August that Mourinho felt at his age he should be playing top-level football regularly, saying:

“Mourinho explained to me that he had Michael Essien and Frank Lampard and he would alternate minutes between the two. He insisted that I have to play regularly and that it would be better in a good team that can guarantee me more minutes on the pitch.”

The Chelsea loan star had been a regular for Los Che, starting nine La Liga matches before picking up various injuries. A cartilage knee injury had meant that Romeu missed the last six weeks of action, but on his return to training, he now appears healthy and raring to go.

Jose Mourinho will be keeping track of his progress from now until the end of the season, as for a player with a lot of talent, he still may have a big future at Stamford Bridge.
