Manchester United fans react on Twitter to reported new Cleverley contract - 'Why are we rewarding mediocrity?'

Tom Cleverley 2

Tom Celverley is on the verge of a new contract with Manchester United according to the latest reports.

If ever there was a symbol which defined the struggle Manchester United have faced this season it’s Tom Cleverley.

Cleverley has come in for some almighty stick this month following some flat Manchester United performances, which caused him to lash out with accusations that he was being made a scapegoat by fans of the club and various sections of the media.

“I feel I've been made a scapegoat a little bit. A few people in the media certainly seem to have a perception of me not doing much in the team,” said the midfielder last month.

David Moyes has defended his player throughout the season and he’s also received support in the form of current Everton boss Roberto Martinez who coached Cleverley during his time in charge of Wigan Athletic.

They both leapt to his defence when news emerged of a petition doing the rounds from fans who wanted to get Cleverley banned from going to the World Cup this summer with England.

The latest reports suggest that Cleverley is closing on a new contract at Manchester United.

To some that have followed his career and his progress it won’t be a surprise but there will be a section of fans who raise an eyebrow if the news is made official, considering the apparent struggles of the midfielder this month.

The reported new deal is going to be worth £15 million to the midfielder and it could do his confidence the world of good as it’s the ultimate show of faith from his manager and the club he represents.

His current deal expires at the end of next season which suggests that if he doesn’t sign on the dotted line then he could be flogged by the club after the World Cup this summer.

It’s split opinion among some United fans. Take a look at a sample of the reaction doing the rounds on Twitter.
