Liverpool's worst signing of the summer: Not Cissokho

Iago Aspas Celta Vigo

Liverpool's Iago Aspas remains one of the most underwhelming players of the Premier League season.

Spanish attacker Iago Aspas was the first player Liverpool paid money to sign last summer, but as the season draws to a conclusion it's clear to say his acquisition has not been a success.

Scorer of 12 goals in La Liga last season for Celta Vigo, with six assists also to his name - he has struggled to make an impact for Liverpool.

Deployed mainly as an attacking midfielder when selected, Aspas has no goals and just a solitary assist in the Premier League, while he did get on the scoresheet in January in the FA Cup win over Oldham.

This seemingly did little to boost his first team prospects, playing a total of nine minutes in the Premier League since deadline day.

With a contract at the club until 2018, it's fair to say there were high hopes for Aspas at Anfield. It's perhaps even more unexpected given his blistering start in pre-season, when he scored three goals and provided two assists in four games - including scoring on his debut.

While full-back Aly Cissokho, a loan signing from Valencia, has attracted plenty of flak for his performances, at least he has in some ways shown himself competent, at least to the point of not hampering Liverpool's top four hunt and title chase whilst a regular pick.

Aspas has barely earned the opportunity, granted the form of Liverpool's attackers has been superb, but when Coutinho was out injured earlier in the season, he failed to show why he deserved a place in the first team.

This season in his 12 appearances, he has mustered just two shots - one on target, while losing possession an astounding 67 times.

He remains on the fringes of the squad, and there is still the possibility he can pop up at a crucial moment as the season reaches it's climax. It will have to be a memorable one to make his campaign a success.
