Late last night, the Daily Mail published a story claiming Manchester United had opened talks over the potential summer transfer of William Carvalho.
The Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder has been in outstanding form all campaign and has played a vital role in their unexpected surge up to second in the Primeira Liga.
Despite a reported €45million release-clause, William could – at least according to the latest report – be available for €10million less than that.
But here is the interesting part. On the same day the English press ran the story of William to United, the Portuguese press said Juventus were interested in the 21-year-old.
This link is not a new one. Reports back in January claimed the Italian champions were suddenly favourites to sign the Portuguese international.
But A Bola now claims Juve could sign the Sporting player as a replacement for Paul Pogba should the Frenchman make his much-touted mega-move to one of Europe’s elite sides, with Paris Saint-Germain most regularly linked.
Is it simply a coincidence that on the day English fans read of apparent talks between Sporting and United, the shadow of the Serie A side looms large in Portuguese print?
Clubs no doubt use the hypothetical interest of other clubs as a bargaining tool all the time. But with David Moyes desperate for a midfielder of William’s quality, he may have to dig deep and act swiftly to get his man.
After all, Sporting know exactly what a talent they have on their hands.
