The Premier League produced no shortage of talking points over the weekend with an important win for Manchester United while Chelsea extended their lead at the top by thrashing Tottenham Hotspur.
There were also important wins for Cardiff City at the other end of the table while the impressive Southampton ground out three points away at Crystal Palace.
Here’s our team of the week based on the weekend.
GK – Petr Cech (Chelsea)
Cech was commanding and comfortable against Tottenham never really putting a foot wrong, which gave his defence confidence.
RB – Rafael (Manchester United)
Looked more like the player who starred for Sir Alex Ferguson against West Brom. Got forward well but was defensively difficult to get the better of.
CB – Chris Smalling (Manchester United)
Following a poor performance for England last week, Smalling responded brilliantly dealing with every threat West Brom put together.
CB – Steven Caulker (Cardiff City)
Caulker bagged himself a brace during the win against Fulham, getting into good positions both times. He also did his basic defensive duties fairly well.
LB – Luke Shaw (Southampton)
The Saints teenager produced the sort of performance against Crystal Palace, which got him into the England side in the first place. He was brilliant at both ends of the pitch.
RM – Robert Snodgrass (Norwich City)
Snodgrass was very difficult for Stoke City to get to grips with during the 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. He seems to be playing somewhere close to the top of his game at the moment.
DM – Nemanja Matic (Chelsea)
Matic has taken to life in England for his second spell like a duck to water. His size and presence is daunting and he broke up the play effectively against Tottenham.
CM – Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United)
For all the stick that Fellaini got over the first half of the season, he produced the sort of performance against West Brom that United fans will be hoping to see more of. He passed the ball well and broke up the play well.
AM – Adam Lallana (Southampton)
Lallana is one of the few players in the Premier League at the moment who can make the ball sing when he picks up possession. He was very difficult for Palace to keep an eye on.
LM – Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
The Belgian is appearing in this team of the week with alarming regularity at the moment. He’s playing well and crucially in the big games against Chelsea’s main opponents.
ST – Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
This was the Wayne Rooney that United fans want to see for the rest of the season. He was everywhere playing on the shoulder of the West Brom defence and dropping off into midfield. Couldn’t miss with his header.
