Brazilian defender David Luiz sat out of Chelsea’s comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur due to injury, but remained in West London.
Dutch defender Van Dijk managed to catch up with the Brazilian and later Tweeted a photo of the pair – suggesting that he may well have been in attendance at Stamford Bridge for the 5.30pm kick-off.
The Dutch defender joined the Hoops for a reported £2.6m from Eredivisie side Groningen last summer, and has thoroughly impressed in his debut season on the British Isles.
According to Scottish paper The Scotsman, Van Dijk’s agent spoke out of his client’s future, saying that the “absolute top English clubs watch him and are very interested.” It is expected that the Celtic defender will move to England this summer, and there are a number of clubs lining-up for his signature.
One of those clubs who have been reportedly tracking the 22-year-old is Manchester United. Reported by the Daily Telegraph two weeks ago, David Moyes was said to be looking at £10m-rated Van Dijk as a possible replacement for the departing Nemanja Vidic.
In light of this recent photo, perhaps Manchester United have already been beaten to the punch by Jose Mourinho’s Premier League leaders.
Chelsea have already signed Kurt Zouma for the future, but beyond an aging John Terry, the Blues can only count on their January signing, Gary Cahill and David Luiz as natural replacements – suggesting that a deal for Virgil Van Dijk isn’t totally out of the question.
Could Chelsea be after Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk?
