Manchester United have long been linked with Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman, both before and after he completed his summer move to Roma.
Reports emanating in Italy and later picked up by the Mirror claimed last month that United had even failed with a €25million bid to bring the player to Old Trafford in January.
But now Strootman has been the victim of a major blow, suffering a knee ligament injury that will reportedly see him out of action for the rest of this season, the summer World Cup and potentially a portion of the next campaign.
His international teammate Robin van Persie was quick to wish him well, tweeting a message to the reported United target on Monday afternoon.
It is a huge blow for a player who has impressed in Serie A and was destined to make his mark on Brazil 2014. We all echo van Persie's sentiment in wishing Strootman a full and speedy recovery.
I wish @Kevin_strootman a speedy recovery so gutted for you my friend! I'm sure you will come back even stronger!— Robin van Persie (@Persie_Official) March 10, 2014
