Several pundits have suggested the weekend’s FA Cup action is proof that nothing can be taken for granted with the semi-final draw.
Manchester City’s defeat at the hands of current cup holders Wigan Athletic makes Arsenal the obvious favourites to end the silverware drought which has hung over the club since 2005.
One pundit, former Sky man and current TalkSport host Richard Keys, has suggested that if the Gunners don’t win the FA Cup this season ahead of Wigan, Hull City or Sheffield United, then the current squad needs to be axed.
No disrespect intended to Blades Hull or Wigan - but if Arsenal don't win silverware this season they should all ship out!— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) March 9, 2014
Controversial? Yep. Tongue in cheek? Perhaps? Realistic? Not at all.
If Arsenal don’t win the FA Cup, arguably their best chance of a trophy this season, then Arsene Wenger is going to be under pressure to make changes but not wholesale changes which will affect the club on a drastic scale.
Wenger proved with the acquisition of Mesut Ozil at the end of the transfer window last summer that he will spend big on players who he feels are better than the stars he already has available.
There are clear areas of the Arsenal first team where fans will be crying out for similar signings in the summer, should the Gunners not pick up a trophy.
They could also have areas to address which have nothing to do with silverware such as needing a right-back if the club can’t get Bacary Sagna tied down to a new contract.
Arsenal have a great chance of winning something this season and if they don’t, while they won’t axe the whole squad which would be stupid, there will be even more pressure to make further marquee signings.
