The German playmaker had been criticized in recent weeks for some underwhelming displays for the North Londoners but his early goal in the 7th minute on Saturday inspired Arsene Wenger’s Reds to progress past the Toffees.
Olivier Giroud came off the bench in the second half to see Mikel Arteta put a penalty (and another) away but it was the Frenchman’s second of the game and Arsenal’s fourth that will surely encourage the fans that the German maestro is back to his best.
Not only did Ozil score the opening goal to get the Gunners started, but he also assisted Giroud’s second of the game in the 85th minute as the home side broke against the visitors.
Not content even with just that as his contribution, the 25-year-old who signed in the summer for £42.5 million even instructed Giroud exactly where to run to finish the goal he created. Watch him stick out his arm and point as he latches onto the ball.
Wenger’s side now face a daunting trip to Munich where they will face the European champions Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League last sixteen tie on Tuesday where they will hope to overturn a two-goal deficit suffered in the first leg.
However, confidence will be high in the camp and the visitors on Tuesday evening will be boosted from the weekend’s convincing performance and the result to go with it that sees them face the FA Cup holders in the next round.
