It was reported last week that Ter Stegen has agreed a deal to join the Catalan giants at the end of the season, when long-serving shot stopper Victor Valdes will leave the Camp Nou. Ter Stegen has established himself as one of the top young goalkeepers in world football during his time with Monchengladbach, and his departure was bound to leave them with a big hole to fill.
But the Bundesliga side haven't waited around to bag their replacement, as the club today confirmed that Basel goalkeeper Yann Sommer will arrive in the summer, and sporting director Max Eberl was clearly delighted to have secured his signature.
"After Marc-Andre ter Stegen has informed us that he definitely wants to leave at the end of the season, we have now reached an agreement with his new club on the transfer arrangements," Eberl said.
"His successor in goal for Borussia will be Yann Sommer. He is an excellent goalkeeper who has already gained a lot of international experience in his 25 years and we are delighted that he has chosen to sign for us. We have not only got a great goalkeeper, but also a leader."
Tottenham had previously been linked with a swoop for Sommer, but the Swiss international will now play under compatriot Lucien Favre, as well as alongside former Basel team mate Granit Xhaka, and suggested that it was simply too difficult to turn down a move to the Bundesliga side.
"Everything's a bit bigger here than in Switzerland," Sommer said. "Borussia are a club with tradition and when you get the chance to play there, you have to do it."
