Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a thumping 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, with substitute Demba Ba scoring two late goals. Ba, who has been on the fringes this season, was handed a place on the bench after Fernando Torres suffered a groin injury in the pre-match warm-up.
“Ba is very important”, Mourinho said. “I proved earlier in the season that I was right to have three strikers because when one is injured you need the other two. It's one of the best decisions we made to keep three strikers.
“It's good for him that he scored. They're not the winning goals but they're goals and they give confidence. He played for 90 minutes for his national team midweek and he came back and scored two, so that's good," continued Mourinho.
The Blues sit top of the Premier League but manager Mourinho has regularly played down Chelsea's chances of lifting the Premier League trophy in May, and goalkeeper Petr Cech has also stated that the squad aren't thinking about winning the title because Manchester City can overtake them if they win their three games in hand.
"We are going game by game, we keep saying that and that’s actually what we’ve been doing,” Cech said. “We will try to stay on top of the league as long as we can. There’s plenty of football to be played but we are in the position where we would like to finish the season."
“City have enough experience and quality in their squad to win their games in hand, and it’s up to them to do that. We are in a good position, we go game by game and we try to do our best," he added.
Meanwhile, speculation continues to link Chelsea with a personnel overhaul this summer. A new report today suggested that Mourinho is interested in bringing Southampton left back Luke Shaw, Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa and Chelsea hero Didier Drogba, now of Galatasaray, to Stamford Bridge this summer.
