Benitez speaks out on "world-class" Reina's Liverpool future

The Spanish goalkeeper’s future is unclear, with the Napoli boss full of praise for him and indicating a stay in Italy could be on the cards.

Pepe Reina’s future remains up in the air, with the Liverpool goalkeeper spending this season on loan at Napoli.

With Simon Mignolet currently holding the number one jersey at Anfield, the Spaniard has been pushed out of the Merseyside club.

It appears that Reina will leave Brendan Rodgers’ men permanently at the end of the season, and he has even been linked with a move to boyhood club Barcelona.

However, with Rafa Benitez knowing Reina well from his time in England and this season, the Napoli boss has hinted that a stay at the Stadio San Paolo could well be on the cards.

“He reads the game very well and is one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Benitez told Sky Italia.

“Will he stay at Napoli? He has a clause and we know it, meanwhile he should continue to do well until the end of the season.”

Reina has made 20 Serie A appearances for high-flying Napoli this season and kept a clean sheet in his side’s important 1-0 win over Roma on Sunday night.

Rodgers stated last year that he was open to Reina pursuing options elsewhere.
