The Gunners had booked their place in the last four after thrashing Everton 4-1 on Saturday but supporters might have feared the worst when they were drawn to face the winner of the Latics' clash with Manchester City.
Lightning struck twice, however, as Uwe Rosler's men left the Etihad Stadium with a 2-1 win, repeating their shock win against Man City from last season's final.
Suddenly, the narrative had shifted. Manuel Pellegrini's hopes of a domestic treble were over and Arsenal fans were over the moon - as Twitter will attest.
Arsene Wenger's men, of course, have not won a trophy since 2005, when they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on penalties. But with the north London side now the only top-half Premier League team remaining in the draw, some fans could be forgiven for daring to dream.
Wenger will be keen to avoid complacency, as the last time the Gunners played out a cup final, they ended up losing 2-1 to Birmingham City - who were relegated later that season. Wigan, meanwhile, have plenty of recent experience at Wembley after last year's fairytale cup success - which ended with a famous 1-0 win over Manchester City.
It is up to the Arsenal players to make sure that doesn't happen again, though many supporters are already celebrating a pending FA Cup trophy. Can Wenger's men finally end their nine-year trophy drought?
Gooners fans certainly hope so...

Arsenal will face Wigan in the semi final. Should be an inspiration to win the FA CUP because there are no big teams left except Arsenal.— Azim Norizan (@AzimNorizan) March 9, 2014
