What record did Manchester United striker Rooney break yesterday?

Wayne Rooney has been directly involved in 21 goals for United this Premier League season - how did that break a record?

Manchester United looked like something back to their best yesterday - as they romped past West Brom at The Hawthorns with relative ease in a 3-0 pasting.

Goals from Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck did the job - with the last goal the best yet in the David Moyes era.

United players taunted with the Baggies defence with some intricate looking play - before Rooney slid the ball through to Danny Welbeck who composed himself, before curling the ball beyond Ben Foster.

It was a fantastic goal that even Sir Alex Ferguson would have been proud of.

And it also marked a milestone for Rooney.

The England international striker’s assist for the Welbeck goal was his tenth for the season - meaning he now has 10 assists and 11 goals to his name for 2013-14 - double figures in both columns.

And it is not the first time he has achieved that feat in England’s top-flight campaign - in fact this is now the fifth time he has done it.

Which, as OptaJoe pointed out, is a new record…

You can see by Rooney’s vital statistics from this season how important he is to the club.

And that record of 10 assists and 11 goals, 21 direct influences in total, is more than Crystal Palace have scored as a team all campaign.

No wonder United did everything in their power to keep Rooney at the club - even if it is costing them a fortune.
