Some of the biggest stories in football have nothing to do with the game.
Such was the case on Saturday morning, when the news broke that Chelsea midfielder Willian had…wait for it…shaved off his afro!
Suddenly Blues fans across the globe were clamouring to learn more about the latest twist in Chelsea’s season – their summer signing seemingly shorn of his lustrous locks.
The story came about after the Brazilian posted a picture of himself on Instagram, a man who at the time one assumed was a barber standing over him and an electric shaver looking very much ready for action.
It seemed the 25-year-old was set to turn out against Tottenham Hotspur – the side he reportedly snubbed in favour of a move to Chelsea – with a new look.
Never had a haircut prompted as many hits since David Beckham left these shores.
But then Willian walked on to the Stamford Bridge pitch with his afro intact. We had been duped. The playful player had played an early April Fools’ joke on everyone.
And yet it says something about social media, and our fascination with everything footballers say and do, that a story that turned out not to be story at all got so many people talking, and tweeting and liking and sharing.
And all the while you can imagine Willian giggling away to himself; reading numerous headlines about his head when he is paid predominantly for what he does with his feet.
