According to Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, Barcelona are tempted to offer Manchester United Alex Song in part-exchange for Dutch international striker Robin Van Persie.
The Red Devils are set for a shake-up this summer following a disappointing campaign. Eliminated from both domestic cups, their Champions League place for next season looks seriously under threat as they are cut adrift in seventh spot in the Premier League. Manchester United also face an early exit from the Champions League to Greek champions Olympiakos.
Following defeat to Olympiakos in that Champions League first-leg tie, Van Persie spoke of his frustration at Manchester United’s style of play under Moyes, and many feel that his general mood suggests that he is heading for the exit this summer.
The Spanish press maintain that Barcelona is a likely destination for Van Persie, and report that Barcelona are willing to offer out-of-favour midfielder Alex Song to Manchester United to sweeten the deal. The former Arsenal star has made just nine La Liga starts this season, and seemingly can’t force his way into the side ahead of Sergio Busquet.
The 26-year-old’s ability is self-evident, and many pundits feel he’s too good to be sitting on the bench most weeks. With Manchester United’s current midfield problems, Song would be a perfect candidate to beef up this vital area. He also has an impressive passing range, which he has developed greatly whilst at Barcelona.
Diaro Sport claims that Van Persie’s value of €20m isn't likely to put the Catalans off, and off-setting the cost by providing Song as a make-weight in any deal with Manchester United would surely make sense. This is a deal which would suit all parties, and one which could capture all the transfer headlines all summer.
Would Manchester United benefit from swapping an unhappy Robin Van Persie with Alex Song ?
