Time for Chelsea star to end his nightmare ?

Reports suggest that Chelsea striker Fernando Torres could be heading to Italy this summer. Is it for the best ?

It's been a long, hard slog for Torres at Stamford Bridge. Let's face it: whatever rare moments of magic the Spaniard has produced for Chelsea, they haven't been worth the endless moments of agony and disappointment that followed. And they certainly weren't worth £50 million.

Could it, then, be the perfect time for Torres to end his Chelsea journey at the end of the current season ?

Reports in the Daily Mail suggest that Inter Milan, who recently confirmed the signing of Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, are planning to lure the 29-year-old to Italy in the summer.

Two words come to mind at the news: why not ?

Torres is clearly not Jose Mourinho's number one striker, with his private joke revealed on French TV seeming to confirm as much.

Torres, of course, has won everything there is to win with the Blues (as well as with the Spanish national team), so there would be no shame in putting an end to his time at Chelsea now.

What wouldn't make much sense, however, would be to reject Inter's advances - if reports are to be believed - and stay at Chelsea when the club look intent on recruiting new strikers next season. Torres struggles for game-time in West London enough as it is, with his statistics for the season hardly justifying a U-turn on Mourinho's selection policy:

As Opta data shows, the 29-year-old has scored just four times in 20 league appearances for Chelsea this season, having also been substituted eight times - almost half of his starts.

Similarly, Torres' assists column is easily surpassed by many in the Premier League, as his 22 contests won with the ball at his feet pale in comparison with Chelsea's Eden Hazard - who has made over 100 this term.

Who could blame Torres if he were to agree to leave England, then? To put a positive spin on it, the Spaniard has already conquered Spain and England, now it might be time to conquer Italy. There may well be others, however, who would make a more cynical appraisal.

Should Torres leave Chelsea for Inter Milan this summer ?
