On this day: £1.5bn Arsenal bid 'waste of time' and Ronaldo United return

On the 8th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 8th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th March 2013…

Hill-Wood you believe it?

It was a story that made the headlines in February of last year - as Arsenal were reportedly all set to be the targets of a massive £1.5bn takeover bid from the Middle East.

The Gunners had been under stress at the time from fans and boardroom tension between majority shareholders Stan Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov had reportedly attracted opportunistic bidders to the lucrative club.

Kroenke dismissed those rumours 24 hours later - but this day saw then chairman Peter Hill-Wood rule it out one last time.

He said of the story:

“I have heard nothing and I don't think anybody knows anything about it at the club. It all seems a bit of a waste of time.”

Of Nike and Ron

Manchester United were reportedly plotting to make a move for the return of their prodigal son Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward was reportedly unsure of his future with Real Madrid at the time - and had recently made his remained affection for his former club clear in a Champions League meeting between the two.

His partnership was Nike was set to help - with the company set to fund alarge portion of the deal in order to get one of their flagship players out of an adidas kit.

In the end, of course, nothing happened - and Ronaldo signed a new deal at Real until 2018 in September 2013.
