Roberto Martinez's side were hoping to see off the Gunners and make it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, and were well in the game after Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Mesut Ozils' early strike, but a second half capitulation gave Arsene Wenger's men a somewhat flattering win.
A penalty from former Toffees hero Mikel Arteta put Arsenal back in front with just 20 minutes to play, before a quickfire double from Frenchman Olivier Giroud sealed Arsenal's passage to Wembley, just one game away from the FA Cup final.
It means another trophy-less season for Everton, and Toffees fans were evidently disappointed that their side once again failed to beat one of the so-called 'bigger' teams, and a number of people came under criticism from fans, including Gareth Barry, Ross Barkley and manager Martinez, but many fans were also buoyant about their chances of getting into Europe this season.
Not much in it until a daft challenge from Barry then switched off and had to chase it. Left spaces which they are good at hitting. #EFC— Rob McGuigan (@RMcG17) March 8, 2014
Frustrating that. Arsenal in the second half really created nothing until Girouds goal, and again Everton not capitalising on chances. #efc— Ben Pleasant (@bpleasant_efc) March 8, 2014
The score doesn't give Everton's performance any justice but the score is the score. Now let's focus on getting into Europe. #EFC— Tom Collins (@Toco464) March 8, 2014
Never give up believing. Under Roberto Martinez I have confidence. He's done well for his 1st season. Many tipped a bottom half finish. #EFC— Ryan (@Ryan_EFC1878) March 8, 2014
Very promising that Lukaku is back and scoring, should get us into Europe, you would hope! #EFC— Luke McCormickClarke (@Clarke527) March 8, 2014
Bit harsh that in the end, Barkley's chance at 1-1 a big moment, should've at least worked the goalkeeper but he's gonna be some player #efc— dankay (@dankay) March 8, 2014
Not good enough Everton. Can't mix it with the big teams on a consistent basis. We'll never progress until we can master that #EFC— Sean O'Donnell (@seano_) March 8, 2014
