Barcelona consider Tottenham’s Vertonghen as Puyol replacement – report

Jan Vertonghen

Mundo Deportivo have claimed that the Belgian centre-half is in the Camp Nou side’s sights ahead of a summer raid.

Jan Vertonghen’s future has been a topic of contention in recent weeks, with the classy Belgian defender admitting that he will have to assess his situation should Tottenham not qualify for the Champions League.

Reports that Liverpool could move for the ex-Ajax centre-half have emerged of late, but a new more ominous suitor has emerged according to reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo have stated that Barcelona have identified Vertonghen as a possible summer addition in the transfer market.

The Camp Nou giants are looking for a top-class defender to replace club stalwart Carles Puyol, who will depart the Catalan side in the summer.

Vertoghen’s versatility has seen him operate at left-back at times this season as Spurs struggle to fulfil their problem area, but has played at centre-half since Tim Sherwood took over from Andre Villas-Boas.

The report claims that Barcelona will consider moves for David Luiz and Fabian Schar also.
