A round up of the latest news stories and transfer rumours about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.

Midfielder Lucas is closing in on a first team return after featuring for the reserves. The Brazilian has been out of action since damaging knee ligaments last January.

“Today I make my return with the reserve team. I am glad that my recovery went very well and I am looking forward for the last 10 games,” said the midfielder earlier today.

Mamadou Sakho is also being tipped to play in the reserves game against West Ham, after failing to feature since he picked up a hamstring problem in the match against Chelsea last December.

Should Sakho and Lucas make it through the under-21 game this evening then they are being tipped to play a part in the away game against arch rivals Manchester United next weekend.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerard says striker Daniel Sturridge can star at the World Cup in Brazil this summer. The Liverpool front man scored the only goal of the game as England defeated Denmark earlier this week.

“Everyone will be looking for Suarez, Ronaldo, the usual suspects to stand up and be the star of the tournament, but Daniel is certainly capable of starring at this World Cup,” Gerrard was quoted by the Sun.

Jordan Henderson is also hoping to feature at the World Cup, revealing his hopes that his form in Liverpool colours can earn him a place in the squad when Roy Hodgson makes his official announcement.

“It would mean everything to me to go to the World Cup and represent my country. First and foremost, I need to do a job for Liverpool. I'll give my all between now and the end of the season. If I do that then I will have a good chance,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

In transfer news, Luis Suarez has revealed that he turned down the chance to join an unnamed Serie A club from Liverpool two years ago, opting to stay at Anfield and tough it out during a difficult period.

“Two years ago I received an important offer from Serie A. I was in the eye of a storm but I decided to stay at Liverpool. Who was it? I’m not going to say,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Metro has suggested Liverpool have the green light to go after the official signing of Manchester City defender Micah Richards. Richards has reportedly rejected the chance to stay at the Manchester club and has been told he can leave in the summer.

In other news, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed he doesn’t blame Liverpool’s Daniel Agger for the injury to Jack Wilshere. A challenge during the England v Denmark friendly earlier this week left Wilshere with a broken foot and he’ll be out of action for six to eight weeks.
