It was reported in The Mirror that the club had already decided on their ‘top transfer target’ for the summer - in the form of Robert Firmino.
The 22-year-old Brazilian, reportedly valued at £12 million, has been in great form this season for TSG Hoffenheim - and Liverpool feel he fits in the Brendan Rodgers mould perfectly.
The attacking midfielder has bagged 12 goals and eight assists in his 22 Bundesliga games this season - impressive figures indeed and form that has seen him linked with a shock call-up to the Brazilian national team.
He struck once again last weekend - bagging the opening goal in a 6-2 thrashing of Champions League chasing VfL Wolfsburg.
This weekend his opponents will be hoping not to be on the end of a similar thrashing. Schalke 04 have been tonked in their last two matches - with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich going to town on the Gelsenkirchen outfit.
With their recent failures in mind, and continued interest in some of their star players, Schalke have already begun to look for possible summer recruits - one of which is Firmino.
Bild report that the player who is ‘rocking the Bundesliga’ is potentially going up against his future employers in their Saturday fixture at the Veltins Arena.
They quote Schalke general manager Horst Heldt, on the subject of Firmino, as saying:
"There are many clubs that deal with him. I will not comment (on Schalke interest)."
He is right - many teams are being linked. Liverpool are not alone as AC Milan, Liverpool, Zenit, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Wolfsburg are all said to be after him.
But he doesn’t get a chance to play in front of them and their fans tomorrow afternoon now … does he?
Available for around £12 million - Firmino is certainly going to be one of the summer’s most wanted men.
