German newspaper Die Welt has offered up a possible explanation for Mesut Ozil’s poor form since the turn of the year.
The German midfielder has been nothing like the player who graced the Premier League over the first chunk of the season with his plight culminating in him being booed off during Germany’s game against Chile last night.
Various reasons have been suggested for his inconsistency; no winter break, the pace and power of Premier League football and the idea that he could be struggling to counter opposition tactics.
However, Die Welt has suggested that it could be down to a change in his personal life and the way he’s represented with his brother replacing his father as his personal advisor.
“In October 2013 he separated from his advisor and father Mustafa, who had previously handled nor the transfer to London and his son worried million contract with a supplier Adidas,” reads the report in Die Welt.
“The fact is that Ozil has since been advised by his brother Mutlu. A strange decision because Mutlu Ozil is just four years older than Mesut and a completely blank slate in the consulting industry.”
Ozil’s form when he initially moved to Arsenal was superb and he quickly had an influence on the team maintaining his impressive assists record that he’d built up in Real Madrid colours.
Regardless of how experienced, how mature and how good a player is, when a change takes place which removes the person who has advised you throughout your entire career, it’s not going to be an easy change to cope with.
We reported Ozil's switch of agent back in October, but it's fascinating to see the German press now looking back on it and pinpointing it as a reason why the player has had a dip in form.
The lack of experience that Die Welt talks about in relation to Ozil’s brother could have directly impacted the Arsenal star in one or two indirect ways.
One of the main jobs for any advisor is to take pressure and attention away from the person they are representing and the lack of experience could be a reason Ozil has to deal with more issues than normal away from the pitch.
It could also just be the case that Ozil misses his father because any father figure is more than just a personal advisor. Fingers crossed as far as Arsenal fans are concerned that if this is the reason for his poor form, he can turn things around and dominate over the rest of the season.
