In the build-up to this season, there was one Manchester United starlet who looked ready to make an impact on the first-team more than most, and it was not Adnan Januzaj.
During a somewhat disappointing pre-season tour that was short of quality, Jesse Lingard was the silver-lining, as he scored four goals in four matches.
As it was, Januzaj came to the fore once the competitive action began – his talent and confidence impossible for David Moyes to ignore; while Lingard went on loan to Birmingham City, where he scored an unbelievable four goals on his debut.
He would go on to score two more goals during his spell in the Championship, before returning to Old Trafford in January.
But after just one first-team match spent on the bench, Lingard was off again – this time to Brighton.
And it was during an interview for their upcoming programme that the 21-year-old revealed he had turned down Liverpool in order to pursue a career at United.
In quotes published by Brighton’s official website, Lingard said, “I was travelling up and down the motorway, training with both Liverpool and United, and when I got to nine I had to make a decision.
“In my last sessions at Liverpool I was not really enjoying it and I got on well with the coaches at United and had a lot of friends there, so my choice was made and it’s paid off so far.”
With aspirations to break into the first-team as soon as possible, Lingard is likely to use his latest loan spell as another way to prove to Moyes he is ready to turn his pre-season form into a regular occurrence at Old Trafford.
